JANUARY
Taniti City — Small enough to cross in an afternoon, with the harbor always close by.
Taniti City is the island’s only real town, home to about 12,000 people, and it is easy to read in a single walk: tin roofs, whitewashed walls, narrow streets, and Yellow Leaf Bay curving along the harbor below. Most visitors do not need a formal tour to get the point; they need an afternoon, a decent pair of shoes, and a little curiosity. You can wander the waterfront, stop for a drink, or ride the Blue Line bus once to see how the island connects back into the city.
Mara’s version is better because it is specific. Take the bus for the full loop — the one with the $1 fare and the every-45-minutes rhythm — just to notice where people get on and off. Then come back at dusk, when the harbor turns soft and the day’s heat drops out of the streets, and walk it again on foot. If you want dinner that still feels like the city is speaking, end at Kahula’s Fish House; if you want one more drink, The Sounding Line is the harbor bar where the evening tends to linger.
